Hippie Hash in California

Greengrocery menuIn March, 2015 I found myself in Sebastopol, north of San Francisco, checking out the handwritten chalk board outside The Greengrocer – a small restaurant which occupies an former train barn, with seating in an old dining car.  When I spotted “hippie hash” on the board I bustled up to owner Joe Rueter, put my hands on my hips, and said sternly, “You know, I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan and we invented hippie hash!”  He grinned and replied, “Well I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan too — I stole that recipe from the Fleetwood and brought it to Sebastopol.”  When I talked to him the restaurant had only been open a couple of weeks.  Best wishes from Ann Arbor, Joe!

CHAA Food Adventures

Welcome to the CHAA Food Blog, where all members are invited to tell stories about their own adventures.  Access is limited right now, so just write your story and send it (with a visual if you like) to Judy Steeh.  The only requirement apart from good taste (in both senses of the phrase) is to keep your story relatively short (no more than 200-300 words).
